HENRI LEBASQUE "Le hamac, Saint-Tropez", 1906-1907 On the advice of Henri Manguin, Henri Lebasque discovered the Midi when he moved into the Villa Demière in Saint-Tropez in 1906. He was won over by the Mediterranean coast and settled there permanently in 1924. An excellent landscape painter, Lebasque liked to liven up his settings by depicting his wife or daughter. In our painting, it's probably his wife Ella lounging in her hammock at the Villa Demière. She is surrounded by lush vegetation, with the Gulf of Saint-Tropez in the background: serenity and languor emanate from this work. With his bold brushwork and vivid colors, reminiscent of Fauvism, the artist uses contrasts to translate the play of light. Art critics of the time dubbed him "the painter of joy and light". "Canvases where the artist's sensitivity merges with the light that inspires him". (Apollinaire)
