HAMADA Tomoo (born 1967), son of Shinsaku Hamada, grandson o - Lot 275
HAMADA Tomoo (born 1967), son of Shinsaku Hamada, grandson of Shoji Hamada (Living National Treasure), Mingei Movement. Flask-shaped vase with a flanged neck, made of glazed stoneware with a brown background featuring an abstract motif; the base is left unglazed. Unsigned. H. 15.5 cm (Good condition) Provenance: Purchased from the Yakimono Gallery in Kyoto, owned by Robert Yellin, in the 2000s. Private collection. The son of Shinsaku Hamada and grandson of Living National Treasure Shoji Hamada, Tomoo Hamada is part of a long family tradition of representatives of the Mingei movement. This “folk art movement,” which emerged in the mid-1920s, emphasizes simplicity and modesty in all forms of traditional art, inspiring—nearly 30 years later—Charlotte Perriand, Sori Yanagi, and the entire free-form movement. As the third generation of the Hamada kiln, Tomoo ensures the continuity of the family’s ceramic tradition; his pieces are featured internationally, from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London to the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.
