TEOTIHUACAN - MEXICO - 700–900 AD - Lot 13
TEOTIHUACAN - MEXICO - 700–900 AD
A rare censer depicting a dignitary or priest in ceremonial attire. It consists of a cylindrical lower section featuring an openwork latticework of diamond shapes punctuated by circular motifs in relief, allowing smoke to escape. The bulbous upper section forms the figure’s torso, with his arms folded at his sides and his hands framing
an imposing shell-shaped pectoral.
The removable upper section serves as a lid. It consists of a wide breastplate with pastillage cups, surmounted by a hieratic face with half-closed eyelids. The face is adorned with body paint, a wide nariguera, and circular tambas. He wears a tall headdress in the form of a headband, the ends of which fall over his shoulders. Emerging from the headdress is an
eagle’s head, recognizable by its hooked beak. The eagle itself is adorned with tambas.
These objects held great ritual significance, as the smoke was used to communicate with ancestors and spirits.
Brown terracotta with significant traces of red-ochre and black polychrome.
