MAYA - GUATEMALA - 500–900 CE - Lot 12
MAYA - GUATEMALA - 500–900 CE An important anthropomorphic censer lid depicting a priestess kneeling in a prayerful pose, her hands resting flat on her ceremonial skirt. She is adorned with an imposing headdress richly decorated with a bow and beads. Her ears are adorned with two enormous square earrings depicting stylized flowers. An imposing medallion necklace encircles her neck. Her bare chest highlights the ritual paintings—or tattoos—that adorn her arms. One depicts a divine mask crowned with two volutes, surrounded by circular dot patterns and knots; the one on the right features a checkerboard pattern with holes in the center. The face, with its delicate features, exudes serenity. The eyes, with well-defined eyelids, are elongated; the aquiline nose is adorned with a nariguera; and the rimmed mouth is slightly parted. Orange-ochre terracotta with black highlights on the face. Traces of manganese oxide Maya culture, Guatemala 500–900 CE H. 52 – W. 23.5 – D. 19 cm (Broken and repaired; missing parts of the headdress) Provenance: - Galerie Bernard, Ramatuelle, France. - Former private collection in Paris, acquired from the gallery in the early 1970s. - Galerie Furstenberg, Paris.
