NAZCA - PERU - 300–600 AD - Lot 7
NAZCA - PERU - 300–600 AD A gourd-shaped vase decorated with a frieze depicting a mythical animal on a cream-colored background. This is the principal deity of the Nazca pantheon, the god Kon, creator of the world, associated with water, rain, and fertility. He is recognizable by his feline, mustached face and his hybrid body, which combines the features of a feline, a bird, and a snake—or, in this case, a fish. Plant motifs allude to the agricultural world and the very purpose of this vase. Equipped with two small handles, it was used to carry the vital element of water. Beige terracotta with polychrome decoration. Nazca culture, Peru 300–600 CE H. 16.5 – Diam. 20 cm (Handle broken and reattached) Provenance: - Former collection of Françoise and Claude Bourelier. - Artcurial, auction of November 3, 2014, lot 38 cm. Acquired from the latter. Expert: Bénédicte Hamard
