CHAVIN - PERU - 700 - 400 BC - Lot 2
CHAVIN - PERU - 700 - 400 BC A vase depicting a richly adorned crouching figure. The figure’s body conforms to the bulbous shape of the vase, while the long neck extends upward to the back. A headband-style headdress topped with three crests covers the figure’s head. The presence of two straps framing the face and the indentation around the mouth and eyes seem to indicate that the figure is wearing a mask. A broad pectoral made of raised beads completes the figure’s attire. Brown terracotta with traces of manganese oxide. Chavin culture, 700–400 B.C. H. 24.5 – Diam. 12 cm (Good condition) Provenance: - Former collection of Françoise and Claude Bourelier. - Artcurial, auction of November 3, 2014, lot 1. Acquired from the auction. Expert: Bénédicte Hamard
