The "present watch" was a watch given by the king, often as a token of recognition, distinction or to honor an important person (ambassador, scientist, officer, etc.). It was a sign of royal favor. These watches, often highly technical and made by the best watchmakers of the day (as in the case of the most illustrious watchmakers such as Abraham-Louis Breguet or Ferdinand Berthoud), represented French craftsmanship, supported by the monarchy. They embodied the wealth and refinement of the Versailles court.
