The first 28 volumes of the original edition were reprinted, followed by this New Edition, the first in-4, generally considered the second edition. It is illustrated with 2 portraits by Cochin (here in the first volume), 13 folding tables and 461 engravings on 445 plates. A fine copy, despite some spotting, most pronounced on volumes II, V, VII, XI, XV, XXIII and XXVII. Missing 5 leaves (t. V, Bbbbb4; t. XV, faux-titre; t. XXX, Ssss1 to Ssss3); spotting in tomes VII, IX, X, XI, XIX, XXV, XXVI, XXVII and 14 plates in t. XXXVII; brown stain in inner margin of 2 volumes (t. XXVIII and XXIX); 4 leaves detached, a few marginal stains, tears and losses, most not affecting the text. Details of defects on request. 3 volumes (of 6) of the Table analytique et raisonnée des matières contenues dans les XXXIX volumes in-quarto du Dictionnaire des sciences... (Lyon, Amable Leroy, 1780-1781, volumes I, V and VI only), in a perfectly identical binding.
