JAPAN, Meiji era (1868-1912) - Lot 152
JAPAN, Meiji era (1868-1912)
Gilded bronze sculpture with brown patina depicting Benkei standing and carrying the Miidera temple bell with one arm, wearing a loose garment adorned with gilded bronze flowers.
The bell is richly decorated with Oni and samurai on a background of flowers and a bat frieze enhanced by gilded bronze. Signed in a Miyao cartouche.
Wooden base with gold-lacquered floral motifs.
H. 90 cm without base. Sculpture mounted as a lamp.
This exceptionally large sculpture is inspired by the myth of the warrior-monk Benkei, renowned for his colossal strength, who carries the very large bell from the Mii-dera temple that he has just stolen to transport it to the summit of Mount Hiei.
The sculpture was created by Miyao's Yokohama production workshops under the direction of founder Miyao Eisuke, who specialized in patinated and gilded bronzes inspired by traditional Japanese mythology.
