VISSCHER, N. Novissima et Accuratissima Totius Americae Desc - Lot 58
VISSCHER, N. Novissima et Accuratissima Totius Americae Descriptio. Amsterdam, ca. 1658.
Col.
435 x 545 mm.
The first state of Visscher's map of the Americas, this decorative map greatly influenced cartography of the Americas, both geographically and artistically. Although it did not bring many cartographic advances, this map popularized elements derived from Blaeu's 1648 world map and Briggs' 1625 map of the ISLAND OF CALIFORNIA. An innovative detail is a wider northern coastline all the way to California. The map is adorned with wild animals throughout the country, a battle scene in South America and the seas are decorated with numerous sailing ships. The lower cartouche features a gold panning scene. The upper cartouche bears a dedication to Cornelis Witsen and depicts three angels carrying an Indian to heaven while chasing the devil.
