[VALERY (Paul)]. L.A.S. addressed to his friend Marguerite Fournier S.l., dated February 9, 1943, one sheet recto, signed P.V. Letter framed, ink a little pale. Letter size 104 x 145 mm "Dear Marguerite, What a look on the other side! My heart sinks and I think of your desolation. Here we understand nothing of this ruin. But in the end, we find ourselves dazed by things, facts, acts whose reasons, causes and consequences we can't see". Marguerite Fournier lived in Marseille, in a small mansion called "La Rose du Ciel" overlooking the Vieux Port and facing Saint-Victor Abbey. Between the wars, it belonged to Marguerite Fournier and her brother-in-law Hippolyte Ebrard. Some of Paul Valéry's letters to Marguerite Fournier are published in Lettres à une amie 1938-1944, Loumarin de Provence, 1988. Expert : Céline BERTIN, Cabinet Le Prince
