Marie-Catherine-Hortense Desjardins, dame de VILLEDIEU. Recu - Lot 51
Marie-Catherine-Hortense Desjardins, dame de VILLEDIEU. Recueil de quelques lettres ou relations galantes Paris, Barbin, 1668. In-16, covered vellum (contemporary binding). Cioranescu, III-66653 /// (4f.)-280 (miscalculated 180). First edition of these letters written by Marie-Catherine-Hortense Desjardins (1640-1683), who became known as dame de Villedieu after her second lover, whom she met after her first affair with her cousin. A prolific and much-appreciated writer in her day, she led a romantic and amorous life as turbulent as those she recounted in her novels. She summed up her moral in her verses: Si l'amour est un vice, c'est un vice plus beau que toutes les vertus. Her works were collected in 10 in-12 volumes in 1702, then in 12 volumes of the same format in 1720-1721.
