THE POKROV - Lot 278
THE POKROV
Russia, Mstiora, second half of the 19th century
Tempera on panel with gold ground.
The Pokrov evokes the apparition of the Virgin Mary and the miracle of the Roman deacon in the Church of the Blachernes in Constantinople.
The palette is shimmering, and the gesso borders are engraved with decorative foliage motifs reminiscent of the cloisonné enamels so popular in Russia at the time, a trademark of the Mstiora workshops.
Very good overall condition, with some wear and tear.
