THE PRESENTATION OF THE VIRGIN IN THE TEMPLE - Lot 277
THE PRESENTATION OF THE VIRGIN IN THE TEMPLE Central Russia, mid-19th century Tempera on panel and gold leaf. Icon probably part of a set depicting the cycle of major liturgical feasts. The colors are shimmering and the iconographic style of vestments and flesh stands out against an architecture of very European classicism, with an almost axonometric perspective, but with several vanishing points, a legacy of the Westernized style introduced by the painters of the Armor Palace School two centuries earlier. The icon is in very good condition, although the original varnish has been removed. 30 x 33.5 cm
