DUY TÂN VIETNAM - Lot 66
DUY TÂN VIETNAM
DUY TÂN or NGUYEN PHUC VINH SAN, VIETNAM (1900 - 1945).
Drawing (1915) and letter (1916) to his friend Lucien Faraut. DUY TÂN was emperor of Viet-Nam from 1907 to 1916 until the failure of the revolt he led against the French protectorate. Dethroned on May 13, 1916 by the French government, he was exiled to Reunion Island. This letter was written a few days before his deposition.
Letter dated April 26, 1916: "Hue, April 26, 1916
My dear Lucien,
I have received a letter from you which gave me great pleasure. At the same time as it relates the various incidents of your trip it brings me the memory of a friend with whom I spent many happy hours. Be assured that, in this regard, all my thanks go to you.
Although you are several hundred miles away from me, as I write this letter, it seems to me that I am still playing tennis with you.
I, here, don't have much to teach you but if it will please you I will tell you briefly about a trip that was short enough in itself, but that almost became too long, I was going to say suffocating.
On Thursday, April 20, at 7:30 a.m., my tutor and I got in the car to go to what was for us a myth: The Cloud Pass.
The beginning of our journey will be carried out without there being anything to note except however a physiological fact of nature to interest the colonels-doctors who are in Annam. When one passes the morning early in front of the cai-pha, one notices that all the good bourgeois who wake up yawn like oysters.
When we arrived in Iruï, we heard a gunshot under the car.
Bang! A flat tire. Quickly we put on the steph-tyre. 500 meters further, a new gun shot. Ah! this is too much. We have to stop and let the driver inflate his tire again. He asks us for half an hour which half an hour is prolonged and is finally changed into 2 hours.
We decide to have lunch under a hut of the neighborhood, with the provisions which we had taken care to take.
As soon as we had finished, the driver told us that the car could work. We got into it and from there to Can-Haï we had 3 flat tires. We were obliged to stop at the local station and to telegraph the Superior President, asking him to send us a car. The old driver of the Superior Residence brought it to us with a praiseworthy eagerness. When it arrived, we returned to Hue in one go without any new incident.
There you have it, my dear friend, the charming trip I made on April 20 and in my next letter I will tell you about a visit I made to Agriculture.
Please accept, my dear Lucien, the expression of my affectionate feelings. Duy Tan "

Lucien Faraut (1902 Marseille - 1999 Aix en Provence) owned three concessions in Dalat where he was a planter. His father was present in the region from the beginning of the 20th century. Numerous family photos and documents testify to this Indochinese life which lasted until the middle of the century.
