DELAUNAY Robert, (1885-1941) - Lot 59
DELAUNAY Robert, (1885-1941) Portrait of Louis Aragon, 1922 Graphite on paper, unsigned, bears a n°254 on the back 38x30,5 cm (Fading and traces of folds) BIBLIOGRAPHY: Habasque Archives, described under n°SD254. PROVENANCE: Sonia Delaunay Collection - Jacques Damase Collection - Private Collection. HISTORY: Briest sale June 21, 1994, Collection Jacques Damase. During the First World War, Robert Delaunay saw some of his friends disappear. The group of Cubists dissociated, each one going his own way" Robert Delaunay felt the need to remake his milieu. A sociable man, eager for company and admiration, he needed a public, and faithful amateurs gave it to him. (Habasque) As soon as he returned to Paris in 1920, Robert Delaunay integrated himself into the Parisian avant-garde milieu. Linked to Tristan Tzara, Breton, Soupault and Aragon, he executed a veritable gallery of portraits of his guests, including the poet Louis Aragon. The latter was then actively participating in the Dada movement. He had just published Anicet ou le Panorama as well as the Adventures of Telemachus, precisely illustrated with a portrait of the author by Robert Delaunay. The artist would have made nine portraits of Aragon. The drawing presented is to be compared to the one kept at the BNF (Habasque 253) and to the illustration of the Adventures of Telemachus
