Flemish-Bugondo school 15th century Saint Catherine of Alexandria High relief in polychromed stone, polychromy added Height: 77 cm Head broken and reattached, left hand restored, right hand, sword, wheel and right foot missing, chips in the drapery (left sleeve, right shoulder, right elbow, brim of the philosopher's hat, book display, base border A saint whose popularity spanned the Middle Ages, Catherine of Alexandria's iconography is as enduring as her cult success. Represented crowned, accompanied by the wheel of her martyrdom and a book symbolizing her knowledge and rhetorical power, she traditionally stomped on King Maxentius. All these iconographic elements come from a fabulous legend concerning the bride of Christ, first told in the Menologe of Basil in the 10th century and popularized by the Golden Legend. Our sculpture takes up these elements while dressing the king, at Catherine's feet, with a headdress characteristic of the representations of the saint in the north of France in the 15th century.
